Social Media Marketing And Tennis!

I wrote an an article on social media marketing and it originally started like this.

Social Media Marketing is advertising by using a social network service. What is a social network service? It is a service used by many people that are interested in the same things. The services are typically online groups that allow users to interact and share aspects of their interests such as events, ideas and activities.

Although the above is true, a nonFacebook, nonTwitter, Baby Boomer friend read the above and said “WHAT the heck are you talking about?”

According to Istrategy Labs, the growth rate for 55+ on Facebook was up over 900% from 1/09/2009 to 1/09/2010.  But this only amounts to 9.5% of the 55+ population. So, of course, the odds would be that my friend would not have a clue to what I was talking about.

So for those of you who know the difference between social media marketing and social network services, this post is not for you.

Being a tennis player, I found a way to describe what I was talking.  Once a month our local tennis facility has a mixer.  For $5.00, you play tennis and eat and drink afterwards.  It is a social event. You get to connect with new people and build relationships. Only when asked “what do you do for a living”, do I mention or promote my business. It is not the place to sell.  However, I have acquired new business clients that I met at the mixer AFTER building a social relationship.

My primary purpose for attending tennis mixers is to play tennis and have fun, but trust me, when the opportunity presents itself, I promote my business.

Social media marketing is advertising using a social network service.  In this case, the social network service is the mixer.  On the internet it is Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Myspace, Flickr, just to name a few.

Yes, social media marketing plays a big role in any entrepreneur’s business. Whereas, there are at most 60 people attending these tennis mixers, there are 1.5 billion internet users who I can connect with.
